Not one of these anymore!

Not one of these either…

But more like this…

This…

or even this…

then iRead is the programme for you. Come along to Waipukurau Library on Monday 8th December @ 5.30 and check it out with Kylee. We are planning to have some great summer fun this holidays culminating in a visit by Ross Kinnaird (who by his own admission was a complete failure at many subjects at school, especially maths, but is now exacting his revenge on teachers by drawing very unflattering caricatures of them in front of their pupils). We will finish with a pool party at Mary and Peter Kip’s. Yes, we are going back there by popular demand. Such great fun was had last year that we decided to do it all again. We love Mary and Peter. They rock!

If you are into Twitter just add us to your contacts and we can keep you updated. In addition to all this stuff happening we are adding some great new books to the children & YA collections over the next few weeks. Head to the catalogue and check us out.

New Stuff from National Library

We have just had a visit from Ruth Miller from National Library telling us about some of the new and exciting things that have been happening. One of these is Coming Home from Digital New Zealand.

Digital New Zealand is a programme of work, funded through the Digital Content Strategy and led by a team in the National Library in collaboration with digital content providers.

In a short sentence, Digital NZ aims to help make New Zealand digital content easy to find, use and share.
On 11 November Digital New Zealand pushed out its first two products – the Coming Home Memory Maker http://remix.digitalnz.org and the Coming Home search and search widget.

Coming Home Search Tool

Search over digital content related to the return of New Zealand troops from overseas conflicts and the impact of war on this country

Try out the Coming Home search by scrolling down this blog and looking for the search box.
Thanks to the LibraryTechNZ blog team for the info. Go check out their blog for more info.

CHB Sports Awards 2008 WINNERS

No surprise to anyone that Westley Gough is Central Hawke’s Bay’s Senior Sportsman of the Year and Premier Sportsperson for 2008. Westley won an Olympic bronze medal at the Beijing Olympics in the Men’s Team Pursuit event this year (That info is for anyone who has been living under a rock for the last 6 months).
Are we proud of him or what!!

Other prize winners on the night were:
JulieAppleton Seymour -Coach of the Year
Riccochet Trampoline Team - Sports Team of the Year
Grant Hornblow - Administrator of the Year
Paul van Beers - Master Sportsperson
Piera Hudson - Young Female Sportsperson
Dominic Bird - Young Male Sportsperson
Logan Bean - Encouragement Award
Waipawa Bowling Club - Sports Club of the Year
Stuart Catley - Official of the Year
Sylvia McCleary - Service to Sport Award

Olympic Gold Medallist Sarah Ullmer was an inspiring guest speaker.

Congratulation to all those involved.
And just remember that the libraries have a HUGE range of sporting books. From biographies of famous sportspeople to ‘how to’ manuals for most sports. Come in and check them out.

A very new arrival is the biography of Olympic Board Sailor Barbara Kendall called (funnily enough) “Wind Driven-The Barbara kendall Story” and is written by her sister Wendy.

And coming soon is netballer Adine Wilson’s story penned by Ron Palenski.

You can reserve both these titles online or just give us a ring or IM me now

LIANZA Update

Sue and Karen are currently away at the Lianza conference in Auckland. Obviously having too much fun to return my texts. I am hoping to get one of them to update us on what is happening up there by posting on the blog. It looks like I will have to keep pestering them or maybe even mention the fact that neither of them have posted here at all yet and then they may be shamed into doing a post. In the meantime take a look over at the conference blog and check it out for yourselves.

On the bedside Table

What can I say.

The best last page and last line of any book I’ve ever read…

The Fire Gospel by Michel Faber

Theo Griepenkeri is a scholar of ancient langauages, grudgingly resigned to a life of obscurity. Then on an aretfact-finding mission to Iraq, he ‘rescues’ some Aramaic scrolls from a bombed museum and smuggles them home to Canada. Translating them he finds the work of a scribe called Malchus: an early Christian and a contemporary of Christ himself.

This book is a masterful combination of theological satire and book-world farce. By turns comic, thought-provoking and shocking, it is a expose of human fallibility which you will either hate or laugh out loud at. A book that truly brings everything you read and believe around in a full circle.

Check out The Text Publishing Company for other great reads.
